Lufkin nonprofit asks public for contributions to downtown art installations

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – Downtown Lufkin could soon have a new face thanks to new art installations.

Tara Hendrix, director of Visit Lufkin, said, “This is an opportunity for everyone in Lufkin and Angelina County to be represented.”

Lufkin Creative aims to beautify downtown with art that reflects the entire community.

Executive director Jackie Zimmerman said they plan to include sculptures, murals and other forms of visual art.

“We’re really interested in interactive artwork so people can come downtown and do something with the art,” Zimmerman said.

Hendrix said the survey will help them understand what residents want to see in places like Cotton Square Park and other downtown locations.

“We want to know what historical figures you would like to see represented. We want to know if there are new things you would like to see presented in these murals,” Hendrix said.

There are currently art murals in downtown Lufkin, but they have seen better days.

“There are also popular murals that fade over time simply because they are exposed to the elements,” Hendrix said.

As the downtown area gets a facelift through the Lufkin Forward project and street improvements, Zimmerman said this is a great opportunity to attract cultural and arts tourism.

“We could start bringing people into the country, increasing our sales tax revenue and helping our businesses by bringing people here to see the art being created,” Zimmerman said.

She said the poll does not have any specific artworks to vote on, but is about gathering opinions and ideas.

“We will make some announcements based on our survey results and then present them to the Lufkin Creative Board in collaboration with Visit Lufkin and the city and discuss what we can do to move forward with our findings,” Zimmerman said.

The survey is open online until August 23rd.

Lufkin Creative launched its Public Art Survey to gather community opinions on public art installations downtown.
