Floating pool in NYC: State-of-the-art water facility is being built at Pier 35 on the East River in Manhattan

NEW YORK (WABC) — New details have been announced about a state-of-the-art floating pool soon to be built in the East River.

Officials announced this week that the pool, which is shaped like a plus sign, will be located near Pier 35 in the Lower East Side.

Filter demonstrations will begin later this month to ensure the innovative model can provide New Yorkers with safe access to swimming.

“New York City’s waterways are among our most important assets. By exploring the possibility of a +POOL, we are not only building on our historic investments in public pools across the City, but we are also expanding equitable access to swimming for all New Yorkers, especially our children,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “Whether it’s investing over a billion dollars to build and maintain public pools, opening more pools this summer, or increasing the number of lifeguards at our beaches and pools, our administration is giving New Yorkers additional ways to cool off as climate change makes heat waves more common. We look forward to continuing to work with Governor Hochul to achieve an equitable vision for swimming in New York City.”

“With innovative solutions like + POOL, we are providing safe places to swim for children and their families in New York City,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “NY SWIMS is the largest statewide investment in the sport of swimming since the New Deal. We are improving access to pools while helping our children learn how to stay safe in the water.”

Meanwhile, New Yorkers can enjoy modernized public outdoor pools in all five boroughs this summer.

  • The Astoria Pool in Queens has reopened after a remodel costing approximately $19 million and features a brand new pool shell, new deck and lighting, state-of-the-art filtration and chemical treatment systems, and upgraded heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical equipment.
  • NYC Parks has opened a completely renovated mini-pool at Edenwald Playground in the Bronx.
  • New colorful concrete pool decks, new plantings for color and shade, new benches, fences and ADA ramps will greet visitors to the John Jay and Sheltering Arms Pools in Manhattan and the West Brighton Pool in Staten Island.
  • Less visible but still important renovations are keeping pools running smoothly, including new utilities and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at Betsy Head Pool in Brooklyn, Lyons Pool in Staten Island, and Highbridge and Jackie Robinson Pools in Manhattan, ensuring these free public facilities will continue to be used for generations to come.
