Kendrick Gilbert impresses veterans on Kentucky’s defensive line

Brad White talks about Kentucky’s defense

Kendrick Gilbert was a strong four-star recruiting prospect for the Kentucky football program in the 2024 high school cycle. The Indianapolis (Ind.) Cathedral product transferred from Purdue to Kentucky and signed with the Wildcats in February. The second-year player is now looking to get playing time.

Gilbert – who also took official visits to Iowa and LSU during the recruiting process – ran with the second unit as a nose tackle during open practices last week and made a positive impression on some veterans in the defensive line room at the Joe Craft Football Training Facility.

“He put in the work. Kendrick Gilbert is a completely different person, man. He comes to work every day and does his thing,” Redshirt Junior Keeshawn Silver told the media on Thursday. “He’s doing what he has to do.”

The timing is perfect for Kentucky. During spring training, Kentucky Super Senior lost Joshua Hayes for the season. The same thing happened with Redshirt Freshman Tavion Gadson. The depth of the inner defense line in Anwar Stewart‘s position room has taken a big hit. Kentucky will need someone to step in after losing the position as well James Dinkins to Purdue via the transfer portal.

Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White is happy with the depth of the defensive line, but sooner or later some young players will have to step in. Kendrick Gilbert seems to be taking a chance after playing just two games in his first season on campus. The Army All-American could be a surprise player and key player for the future of the defensive line.
