DVIDS – Video – Security Message from Vice Admiral John Mustin for Summer 2024

Greetings, shipmates, I am Vice Admiral John Mustin, Chief of Naval Reserve and Commander, Navy Reserve Force. As we steam through the summer season, I want to express my gratitude to you, our Naval Reserve Soldiers, and each of your families for the continued support of our great nation through your hard work on the deck plates, airfields, waterfront, and headquarters buildings.

The Navy Reserve remains an elite force in an increasingly competitive world. I am proud to serve with each of you. During the summer months, many of us take time to travel or take a family vacation. Regardless of how you choose to relax, I want to remind you that your safety and the safety of your families is critical to the readiness of our military.

Unfortunately, we lost 27 of our shipmates to off-duty accidents last summer, and most of those accidents were entirely preventable, provided we properly assess risk, follow the law, and use best practices. This calculation holds true whether you’re out on the road, at the beach, or just enjoying the great outdoors. By having a plan, using common sense, and avoiding high-risk activities, we can all return from the summer safe and with great family memories.

This is especially important for those of you who ride a motorcycle, as statistically you are at a much higher risk of serious injury. Before you even think about getting on a motorcycle, make sure you have completed your motorcycle safety course. And remember to always wear your helmet, eye protection, and protective clothing. If you are going to the beach or even a lake, stay alert and keep an eye on yourself and your family.

Drink driving, whether on the road or on the water, is illegal and dangerous. I ask that you follow operational risk management. Make sure your children wear flotation devices when you are out and about and be aware of strong currents in case they put you at risk.

As always, stay hydrated. Record-breaking temperatures are occurring across the country. Limit your time in the sun. And don’t forget sunscreen. Excessive heat, especially dehydration, is a significant risk that can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke if you’re not careful. Stay up to date on your weather app and make sure you have a plan to minimize your sun exposure and excessive heat.

So, in conclusion: Use common sense. Learn to recognize the signs of heat illness. Stay hydrated. Drink alcohol wisely. Dress for summer and keep an eye on your children and pets. Always keep an eye on the safety of your friends and family. And be careful out there. You are our Navy’s most important asset and we need you at 100 percent.

Make good choices and most importantly, take care of each other. So enjoy the rest of the summer. Take care of yourselves and know how proud I am of you and how much I appreciate what you and your families do for our Navy every day.

Once again, take care of yourselves and let’s get started.
