Journalism has seen numerous technological advances, from the introduction of newspapers and radio to the rise of alternative media such as social media and podcasts. The most recent massive shift is the introduction of artificial intelligence and its impact not only on the way we work, but also on the way we consume information. As this technology becomes more sophisticated and ubiquitous, how can we ensure that news publishers thrive despite the changes to our internet ecosystem?

We are excited to announce that Perplexity is making a $250,000 gift to Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications to support research on these important topics. Led by Jeremy Gilbert, professor at the Medill School and Knight Chair in Digital Media Strategy, the Knight Lab is already experimenting with ways AI can support the work of journalists and how this technology will transform the news industry on a larger scale.

This research will continue to explore how AI can improve journalistic workflows in ways that promote transparency and accuracy, and what additional AI capabilities we can develop to support reporting. The lab’s plans will explore ways in which generative AI can strengthen tools for journalism and how generative AI can improve the media experience of news consumers. In addition to this donation, Medill will receive data, insights, and access to collaborators from Perplexity and publishing partners like The Texas Tribune to complement the lab’s research.
