GRAND ISLAND – The Nebraska State Fair is turning to a different decorative element for this year’s community decorating contest: wooden pallets.

In the past, groups have decorated items such as hay bales, but this year, for the first time, wooden pallets are being used.

30 selected participants received five wooden pallets. The entries will be judged on August 12th and 13th. The winners of the competition will be announced on August 16th. The three best entries will receive prizes.

Additionally, the People’s Choice Award will be determined based on photo likes on the Nebraska State Fair Facebook page.

Two of this year’s entries were at Home Federal Bank on West Stolley Park Road and at Tabitha in Prairie Commons.

At the Home Federal Bank, pallets were used to build railroad tracks. A wooden locomotive sits on the tracks. A sign reads, “Fun at the State Fair with Rails.”

At Tabitha at Prairie Commons, something that looks like a pickup truck was built out of wood. The blue truck has the words “All roads lead to fun” written on it. The pickup’s headlights are glowing white circle lights.
