Detroit Lions waive injured wide receiver Antoine Green and sign QB Jake Fromm

The Detroit Lions have announced another series of roster changes in light of some recent injuries.

First of all, they released receiver Antoine Green on an injury report. Green suffered a concussion/neck injury in Thursday’s preseason game and did not return. If Green makes it through the waivers, he will return to Detroit’s injured list, but his season will be over (unless the Lions release him on an injury report).

Green was one of the Lions’ main contenders for the WR3 spot, competing with Donovan Peoples-Jones and Daurice Fountain, among others

The Lions also signed quarterback Jake Fromm, a signing that came after Hendon Hooker also suffered a concussion in the season opener against the New York Giants. Coach Dan Campbell said this week that Hooker likely wouldn’t be ready to play until Friday at the earliest, leaving the Lions with no choice but to sign another quarterback for Saturday’s season opener against the Chiefs.

“That could be decided today or tomorrow down the stretch,” Campbell said of signing a quarterback. “There’s a chance. I think we’ll have a pretty good idea this afternoon of what we need to do to make sure we have a player other than Nate (Sudfeld) for the game. We’ve talked about it.”

Fromm was selected in the fifth round by the Bills in 2020. He has only played three games – in 2021 for the Giants. He was most recently with the Commanders, but was released in May.

In addition to those two transfers, the Lions released Ike Boettger and signed linebacker Ty Summers. Boettger was only signed at the beginning of training camp and his release could be a sign that Christian Mahogany could be back on the field soon. Campbell noted that Mahogany – who is still on the non-football sick list – has finally returned to the building but still needs to get back in shape before he can return to the practice field.

Summers is a veteran linebacker and former seventh-round pick of the Packers. He has played in 67 games over the course of five seasons, but mostly on special teams. He spent most of this offseason with the Jaguars, but was released on Sunday. He had two tackles in the preseason opener for the Jaguars, played 12 snaps on defense and seven on special teams.
