Nebraska State Patrol identifies man killed in wrong-way driving accident on I-80

GREENWOOD, Nebraska (KOLN) – The Nebraska State Patrol has identified an 88-year-old man who died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Greenwood early Sunday.

According to the State Patrol, Chester Heidel of Livingston, Texas, was killed around 3:30 a.m. in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer between mile markers 419 and 420.

Authorities reported that Heidel was driving a Ford Econoline van westbound in the eastbound lanes when he collided with the tractor-trailer. Heidel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi-trailer was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, where he was treated for minor injuries and released, the State Patrol said.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Cass County Emergency Management Agency assisted at the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the investigation.

The accident closed the eastbound lanes of I-80 for about three hours.
