Nearly a year after news broke that basketball star Shaquille O’Neal’s fast-food restaurant Big Chicken was coming to Hattiesburg, the first signs of progress are emerging.
A sign on the property, which is located between the Walmart Supercenter and the ALDI grocery store on US 98 West, tells passersby that it is the “future location of Big Chicken.”
SRS Real Estate Partners in Birmingham, Alabama, confirmed the news in September 2023, but did not provide details on when the restaurant might open. The property covers nearly 1½ acres.

Big Chicken was founded in 2018 to offer fast, casual dining that includes some of O’Neal’s childhood home-cooked favorites updated with the latest flavor trends.
The menu features rich, crispy chicken sandwiches like “The Ultimate,” stuffed with onion rings and mac and cheese. Alternatively, guests can keep it simpler and opt for “The Original,” served with Shaq sauce and pickles.
Other offerings include chicken tenders, popcorn chicken and salads. Sides include fries, dirty fries, jalapeno slaw and O’Neal’s mother Lucille’s Mac and Cheese.
The restaurant chain also offers homemade milkshakes and ice cream sundaes with a variety of toppings, from peanut butter chips to salted caramel to cookies and cream.
