Spoilers for Coronation Street follow.
Coronation Street has revealed more details of Roy Cropper’s sad prison history as he remains under suspicion in connection with the disappearance of teenager Lauren Bolton.
After Lauren suddenly disappeared earlier this year, Roy was accused of her murder. Later this week, he is taken into custody following an incident involving a woman who claimed to be Lauren’s mother.
In scenes airing on Monday, April 15 and Wednesday, April 17, things get even grimmer as Roy is still in police custody. After he and his lawyer Dee-Dee Bailey take their seats in the interview room, Roy asks Dee-Dee for a piece of paper and an envelope and begins to write.

As the trial begins, the prosecution lawyer paints a picture of Roy as a murderer with a violent past. Much to Roy’s dismay, they go into detail about his previous run-ins with the law, including his attack on Gary Windass and the historic kidnapping of foster child Wayne Hayes.
Later, Nina Lucas, Evelyn Plummer and Carla Barlow await Roy’s bail hearing. When Dee-Dee rushes over and hands Nina a letter from Roy, the three of them have to hold back tears as they realize that Roy is convinced he should go to prison.
Evelyn cannot bear to sit through the entire hearing and instead goes back to the café to check on the dog Freddie.

Back in court, Dee-Dee presents her case and asks the judge to release Roy on bail. Unfortunately, the judge denies the request and orders him to remain in custody until his murder trial takes place.
The next day, Roy sits devastated in his prison cell, refuses his breakfast and then refuses to leave the cell.

Roy and his family have come under increasing pressure in recent weeks following the public outcry against Roy.
This week, Stu Carpenter is attacked when he tries to investigate Lauren’s disappearance himself in order to clear Roy’s name. At the same time, Roy’s friendship with Sam Blakeman is tested when Sam is forced to lie in order to spend time with Roy.
Actor David Neilson commented on Roy’s devastating story, saying his character worries that “everything he does or says will be misinterpreted and he doesn’t have a real voice.”
Coronation Street is broadcast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streamed on ITVX.
