United Way hosts breakfast to launch 2025 campaign

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) – The United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties hosted a breakfast Thursday morning to kick off their fall campaign.

The 2025 campaign’s theme is “United We Rise” and aims to inspire people in the workplace to work together to improve their communities in areas such as health, education and financial stability.

Co-chairs Maj. Gen. Jim Hoyer and WVU Health Sciences Chancellor Dr. Clay Marsh were on hand to deliver their remarks. Dr. Marsh spoke about how health is related to people’s connections and sense of community and urged people to donate to this year’s campaign.

“Every dollar helps,” said Dr. Marsh. “Every dollar can be another piece of food for a child in need, a piece of winter clothing for someone who doesn’t have it, or support for a struggling family.”

Maj. Gen. Hoyer recalled how often he saw the United Way and people in emergency situations during his time in the National Guard. He said he viewed strengthening communities as a matter of national security.

“Sometimes we are so divided. Being part of an initiative that brings the community together, brings different thoughts and ideas and people together to focus on taking care of other people and making our communities more resilient – that is national security,” said Major General Hoyer.

United Way estimates that by 2023 it will have helped 1,131 people receive mental health counseling, 216 people with disabilities find employment, and 1,628 children receive after-school care and support.
