Have you been seeing burnt orange furniture everywhere lately? You’re not alone. This luxurious and confident shade is becoming increasingly popular in the fashion industry and has now also entered the homewares sector, where furniture – particularly seating – is being made in this shade.
From the best sofas to the best sleeper sofas, there’s a hint of burnt orange among the standard neutrals. If you haven’t noticed it before, trust me, you will now. So why is this tone so on-trend right now?
Why burnt orange furniture is currently so popular
Before it started making the rounds in furniture, the rusty shade became a popular option for interior designers. As we all know, The devil wears PradaWhen designers give their love to a color, it seeps into more accessible areas.
“Burnt orange is making the rounds and making a bold comeback in interior design. I couldn’t be happier as it’s a firm Kelling favourite and a colour we use often! This vibrant yet earthy shade adds warmth and elegance to any room, making it the ideal choice for homeowners and interior designers,” says Emma Deterding, founder of Kelling Designs.
“Burnt orange has been growing in popularity for some time and now this shade is really on the rise,” agrees Ali Edwards, head of design at MADE. “As a natural material, terracotta has grown in importance in recent years, which has been reflected in fabric colours and interior paints.”
There’s also the retro vibes that burnt orange furniture brings to a room. One of the biggest home decor trends of the year so far has been the ’70s revival, and the love for mid-century living rooms and design just keeps growing. With the rusty, warm tones of burnt orange being an integral part of this design era, it was really only a matter of time before it became a trend all its own.
“The colour is reminiscent of the 70s, a design era that has been on trend in recent years,” agrees designer Emma. “It makes it look modern and fresh even in the most traditional environments.”
“Burnt orange adds a warm, retro feel to any room, reminiscent of the rich color palettes of 1970s interiors that exude cozy decadence,” adds James Cottingham, lead designer at Habitat.
How to use burnt orange furniture
The burning orange furniture trend is wonderfully versatile and will suit most rooms in the house. As it can be a bold shade, it is perfect to use it on just a single piece of furniture to draw the eye to the colour and let it speak for itself.
‘“It can be paired with neutral tones like beige, taupe and grey to balance the intensity, or with bold teal, deep blue or green to make a more dramatic statement,” advises Emma.
However, if you are not looking for new seating or you prefer the shade, you can do the experiment another way.
“If you’re not feeling so bold in your design choices, incorporating burnt orange more subtly through accents on textiles, rugs, artwork or accessories will allow you to add little pops of colour where you want them without overwhelming the room,” suggests Emma.

“The Jetson makes a great side chair because the vibrancy of the orange undertones can encourage social interaction and creativity,” says James of Habitat.
“The Thea chair in cinnamon velvet, in particular, seamlessly combines a bold pop of color with a chunky silhouette and practical comfort,” says Ali from MADE.
So try incorporating a bold dark orange chair into your home and see how it livens up your ambience. Otherwise, try some smaller details first and then work your way up.
