Independence Day gift: Free health insurance for 207 rural students

Pune: In an encouraging initiative on the occasion of Independence Day, 207 students and teachers of four Zilla Parishad primary schools in Khodad, Junnar were provided free health insurance.

This noble gesture was led by local heroes Balakrishna Erande, a former soldier and Superintendent of Pune Rural Post Office, and Avdhut Kharmale, a software developer currently working abroad. Both men financed the insurance from their own pockets as a way of fulfilling their social responsibility.

The initiative covers students of Life Education Temple, Amarwadi Zilla Parishad School, Gadachiwadi Zilla Parishad School and Malwadi Zilla Parishad School and provides them with health insurance for one year.

The policy covers up to Rs 40,000 in medical expenses for accidents that occur at home or while playing. In more serious cases, such as permanent disability or accidental death, the insurance company promises to compensate the affected family up to Rs 200,000.

In addition, the plan also covers incidents such as snake bites, leopard attacks, electric shocks and sudden accidents.

Since most of the students come from economically weak farming families, the provision of health insurance represents a considerable relief.

In rural areas, awareness about health insurance is still low as unexpected accidents can cause financial burdens. This initiative ensures that students and their families have a safety net for such unforeseen circumstances.

Balakrishna Erande says the initiative aims to provide much-needed financial security to students from underprivileged families, while Avdhut Kharmale hopes it will also educate parents and villagers about the importance of insurance and the benefits of different postal systems.
