Big Lots in Brevard – is this the list of stores closing?

Discount retailer Big Lots is closing dozens of its stores in Florida.

By the end of the year, more than 300 stores nationwide will be closed for financial reasons.

“In 2024, the U.S. economy will continue to face macroeconomic challenges, such as increased inflation, which has negatively impacted the purchasing power of our customers,” Big Lots said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in July.

Brevard County has two Big Lots locations.

  • Cocoa – 801 Dixon Blvd., Suite 1131
  • Melbourne – 1345 S. Babcock Street

What is Big Lots?

Big Lots is known as a discount retailer that sells everything from home goods to toys to seasonal items and more.

The company was founded in 1967 by businessman Sol Shenk out of his love for trading, especially in auto parts and various types of vehicles. He started the company in 1970 under the name Consolidated International.

Over the years, the name has changed and various companies have been acquired. Big Lots was founded in 1982.
