(La Porte County, IN) – If your property was damaged in the recent storms, be sure to keep your receipts.
EMA Director Rob Sabie informed county commissioners this week that the state is exploring possible financial assistance for damages caused by the severe weather that hit La Porte County a few weeks ago.
Due to extensive damage throughout the county, local authorities declared a state of emergency, but Sabie said that was not enough to meet state or federal requirements for disaster relief. However, since nearby Porter County was eligible for aid, La Porte could receive some money with the proper documentation.
“It doesn’t have to be structural damage,” Sabie said. “It can be a tree in the yard. Some people had two, three, five trees in their yard. And they have to pay to have them removed. It adds up. It might not be much, but anything helps.”
Sabie said some county workers are still working on tree removal. State officials will soon return to La Porte County to follow up on the matter. When they do, county officials will set up a damage reporting website and inform the public how to use it. In the meantime, anyone who suffered damage from the July 15 storm is asked to come forward.
