It was a rough first half for Detroit Lions veteran quarterback Nate Sudfeld, but the offense took off when second-year passer Hendon Hooker took over in the second half.
The Lions took advantage of Hooker’s mobility early and often, and the former Tennessee Volunteer got into the game well. But no play was more impressive than his run late in the third quarter. On a play-action kick, Hooker had to dodge some pressure at first, but easily beat the defender around the corner.
Now facing the second line of defense, Hooker didn’t slow down. He didn’t even think about slipping. Instead, he lowered his shoulder at full speed and drove it straight into the torso of Giants safety Gervarrius Owens, sending the New York defender flying backward.
Hooker gained 16 yards on that play, setting up Detroit’s first trip into the red zone of the game. Unfortunately, the Lions were left scoreless on that drive after Hooker’s pass was intercepted at the line on fourth down.
UPDATE: Hooker went to the locker room after this trip after spending some time in the medical tent.
UPDATE 2: According to Lions coach Dan Campbell, Hooker is officially in the concussion protocol. In addition, receiver Antoine Green is also in the concussion protocol, defensive lineman David Bada has an Achilles tendon injury, offensive tackle Connor Galvin has a knee injury and defensive end James Houston is dealing with a bone bruise. Galvin and Bada were carted off the field and were unable to bear any weight on their injured legs.
As soon as further updates on these players arrive, we will add them to this post.
