Search operations continue for missing boater in Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The search for a missing boater in Green Bay, near Marinette, continues Sunday.

Bill Salnik and his two children, five-year-old Charlotte and three-year-old Josh, were reported missing in late July when they failed to return from a sailing trip. Bill’s sailboat was found capsized off the coast of Fish Creek. Search crews soon found the bodies of Charlotte and Josh wearing life jackets.

The Door County Sheriff’s Department said the water patrol is still searching for Salnik, but is also asking boaters in the bay to keep an eye out in hopes of finding even the smallest clue.

On Sunday, we met some of the boaters who helped search this weekend near Menekaunee Harbor. Some of the searchers also brought drones, binoculars and cadaver dogs, which are usually helpful in recovery missions.

Everyone wants to give the family some closure because they know it is a difficult situation.

Even if this weekend’s efforts are unsuccessful, many of the volunteers vow to be back on the water soon.

“I just hope they can find Bill today. We’re doing what we can, and if we put another search together, Mike will let us know,” said Sarah Peck of Menominee, Michigan. “Then we may be able to get some more boaters together.”

If necessary, search crews hope to be back on the water possibly next Friday, focusing on waters closer to Door County.
