Former national security advisor to the Trump administration John Bolton criticized his former boss on Thursday as a man who was so categorically dishonest that he could no longer distinguish between truth and lies.
Bolton claimed that the former president Donald Trump lives in his own reality and if his words do not match the facts of a particular situation, he “actually doesn’t care”.
On CNN’s The sourcehost Kaitlan Collins pressed Bolton for his thoughts on an hour-long press conference Trump held earlier in the day at Mar-a-Lago in which he criticized Democrats and the media and challenged the vice president. Kamala Harris to three debates.
Bolton predicted Trump was preparing excuses for defeat in 2024 before Collins asked him about the former president’s comments in which he said he had previously been “protective” of the former secretary of state. Hillary Clinton.
“Something else happened today in this very long press conference. We’re going to show you what Trump said today and then show you what actually happened,” Collins said.
She aired a clip from Trump’s press conference on Thursday in which he said of Clinton: “I was very protective of her. Nobody would understand that, but I think my people understand. They kept saying, ‘Lock her up, lock her up,’ but I just said, ‘Please relax.'”
Collins then aired a series of clips of Trump attacking his 2016 rival in the weeks and days leading up to the election.
“Guys, honestly, she’s guilty as hell,” Trump said in one clip, while saying in another, “I think she should be in jail. She should be locked up.” Bolton responded:
Trump can’t tell the difference between truth and lies. It’s not that he lies a lot, because to lie you have to do it consciously. He just can’t tell the difference. So he makes up what he wants to say at any given time. If it happens to agree with what everybody else is seeing, that’s fine. And if it doesn’t agree with anyone, he doesn’t care, and he’s gotten away with it for decades. So in his eyes, the truth is what he wants. And that’s what you heard today, yes.
