DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Concept Art Highlights Matthew McConaughey’s Cowboy Pool (and a Funny Discarded Detail)

Deadpool and Wolverine introduces the Deadpool Corps for an unforgettable action scene set to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” Few of them have voice lines, and those that do are played by members of Ryan Reynolds’ family, which proves to be perfect casting.

The fast-talking cowboy pool is an exception, however, as his voice is provided by Matthew McConaughey, an actor that comic book fans have long wanted to see in a superhero film (he was once one of those rumored to play the role of Doctor Strange).

Now, Deadpool and Wolverine Concept artist Jonay Bacallado has released his design for Western Wade Wilson. “One of the coolest and craziest scenes in the film is the opening of the portal and the arrival of an army of Deadpool variants. Cowboypool was one of the first scenes to be conceived,” he explains.

“(Mayes C. Rubeo) wanted to pay tribute to the Western genre. We were inspired by great icons like Clint Eastwood. We adapted shapes, materials and motifs to create a more organic atmosphere,” Bacallado continues. “The Deadpool poncho pattern was even created using the traditional knitting method. Turns out he’s a guy with so much attitude!”

The poncho didn’t make it into the film, but it’s a fun Easter egg. Bacallado worked on several key characters in the three sequels, including Elektra, the Human Torch, and Ladypool (see more of his work here).

“Ryan (Reynolds) was the voice of Cowboypool in the first cuts,” Deadpool and Wolverine Director Shawn Levy recently revealed it. “He made the most amazing cowboy pool and I begged him to let us use his voice.”

“I think at one point he was like, ‘Okay, fine, we’re sticking with my voice unless we get someone like Matthew McConaughey.’ Cut to…yes! Literally days later, Matthew sent us this recording. It was so good and it fit like butter. ‘Ryan, you’re fired as Cowboypool. Matthew, you’re in.'”

Reynolds also broke his silence on this casting in an Instagram story, saying: “At its best, this business is a true community and being there for one another is a great example of that.”

“A huge thank you to this wonderful guy from heaven, (Matthew McConaughey). Not only do he and (Camila Alves McConaughey) do the real deal, (Pantalones Tequila), but he also dips into the less exciting world of acting from time to time.” concluded the actor.
