Competitive eater wants to break Michigan cookie record

KOCHVILLE TOWNSHIP, MI — Not many people manage to finish two of the giant gourmet baked goods from Heidi’s Darn Good Cookies, says shop co-owner Mark Niernberg.

But Jack LeGath, a competitive eater from Ohio, will try to break the store’s record of eating 12 cookies in 14 minutes or less.

Niernberg said it’s a sight he’ll have to see to believe when LeGath attempts the feat at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at the store’s Kochville Township branch, 2903 Pierce.

“He told me, ‘I don’t think this will be a challenge,'” Niernberg recalls an earlier conversation with LeGath. “He said, ‘I can break this record.'”

If LeGath’s prediction comes true, Niernberg says the competitive eater will want to keep on feasting. The second goal: to see how many cookies he can eat in total.

Niernberg said LeGath planned to record the operation and likely upload it for his social media followers. LeGath has accounts on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook and regularly appears in YouTube videos.

According to Niernberg, the cookie flavors LeGath expects on Thursday include: chocolate chunk, chocolate espresso, coconut, Hubba-Bubba, lemon, M&Ms, oatmeal cake, peanut butter jelly, raspberry, strawberry crunch, sugar and trail mix.

“There’s no way I could eat them all,” said Niernberg. “They’re big cookies.”

Niernberg said the most Heidi’s Darn Good Cookies he’s eaten in one sitting was “four and a half.”

He predicted that LeGath would give up before he had eaten 20 cookies.

“At some point your brain tells you, ‘This is a sugar overdose,'” he said.

But if anyone can exceed his expectations, it’s LeGath, Niernberg said. He’s seen videos of LeGath in action.

LeGath won an eating contest at Royals Mollete Barcelona Bakery in Monroe earlier this month, beating the restaurant’s 17-minute record for eating a giant pizza slice by nearly 2 minutes. A video of that feat remains available on YouTube.

Heidi’s Darn Good Cookies was founded in 2017 and also operates a location in Bay City at 1590 S. Euclid.
