£16.2 million investment in green energy at hospital

As part of a £16.2 million investment, the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital will introduce energy-saving measures such as solar panels and heat pumps.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) secured funding for the measures through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

The trust said the investment would save an estimated £1 million a year in energy costs and reduce the hospital’s emissions by more than 3,000 tonnes of carbon a year.

At the national level, the NHS aims to achieve a net zero emissions limit by 2040.

“This is in line with our vision of sustainable healthcare services and more modern facilities that will improve the experience of our patients and colleagues,” said Inese Robotham of the trust’s climate group.

The project will install heat pump technology to provide low-carbon heating and hot and cold water to the hospital site.

Solar panels, improved roof and pipe insulation and the installation of energy-saving ventilation systems would also help reduce the site’s energy consumption.

Once additional funding is secured, the Trust also intends to install solar panels and LED lighting at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford.

Extensive work is already underway at RSH as part of the hospital redevelopment programme, which will eventually see PRH lose its entire emergency department and the main emergency department relocate to Shrewsbury.

The work currently underway involves a four-storey extension around the existing main entrance with a new women’s and children’s ward, an acute ward and an intensive care unit.
