49ers GM John Lynch won’t say whether Trent Williams threatened to resign

SANTA CLARA — John Lynch was asked about 49ers left tackle Trent Williams on Wednesday. Here’s what Lynch said, courtesy of the 49ers’ public relations department.

Q: Is there any update on T. Trent Williams’ situation?

LYNCH: “No, there are no updates. Communication is good. We’re constantly working, throwing ideas around to try to make a breakthrough, but so far it just hasn’t happened.”

Q: Coming back to Trent Williams, did he ever threaten to retire?

LYNCH: “I’m not going to get involved in that. I’ve always said that personal conversations and things like that are never told to anyone. Those are private conversations. So I’m not going to get involved in private conversations that Trent and I and Trent and our organization have had.”

ME: It seems like you saw this conflict with Brandon Aiyuk coming a few months ago. Did the situation with Trent Williams surprise you?

LYNCH: “I don’t know if I foresaw the stalemate with Brandon. I saw a situation that we were going to have to deal with, and man, we’ve been trying for a long time. We’re not paid to try. We’re paid to do. And I take responsibility for anything that didn’t happen. But I’m not going to stop fighting for the best solution, whatever that may be. With the Trent situation, things get in the way. And that’s what happened. Trent is a fantastic player. He’s a great leader on this team. I’ll never praise Trent enough and what he means to this place. It was a great day when I got that call from (former NFL head coach Ron) Rivera telling me they were going to make this trade. He’s been incredible since he’s been here. We appreciate Trent, we love Trent, we want Trent here. And I’m confident that can happen soon.”
