Students make stuffed animals and eat free food at the back-to-school event

On August 27, students gathered in the SUN building to donate socks, make stuffed animals, and eat ice cream at the “Sock It” event organized by the Office of Student Engagement.

To foster community spirit at AACC, organizers asked attendees to bring clean socks to the event, which OSE will donate to a local charity, the Arundel House of Hope, which accepts winter clothing donations, according to OSE event specialist Winnie Shabazz.

“It’s important to understand how to build relationships with other organizations within the community, and it also helps other families in need,” Shabazz said. “I thought socks would be a good place to start … and it kind of fits the theme, socks are like cotton and (students) stuff the bears.”

According to Shabazz, the students donated over $100 worth of socks.

The students spent the afternoon making stuffed animals and socializing.

“I think it’s good to be able to start the year by building community and also doing something that benefits others,” said Jazz Perez, a third-year business student who attended the event.

Annaliz Gonzalez, a freshman studying homeland security management and intelligence analysis, agreed.

“I really love Build-a-Bear and wanted to donate,” Gonzalez said. “So I thought it would be a good win-win situation and … you get to meet people.”
