In a public service ad for PETA, John 5 cuddles with his service dog Churro, showing a softer side than fans of the heavy metal rocker are used to. John adopted Churro – an otherwise hairless dog with a natural mohawk – from a shelter that found him abandoned in a crate in the San Bernardino Desert. Together, John 5 and his spiky-haired canine companion look like a Rolling Stone Title page.

Churro’s story shows that virtually any breed of dog can be found at a shelter or through a rescue organization. With around 70 million homeless dogs and cats in the U.S. at any given time, shelters across the country have been overcrowded for years. Some shelters with misguided policies warehouse dogs for months or even years and turn animals away, leaving the most vulnerable animals with nowhere to go—and letting them reproduce further exacerbates the pet overpopulation crisis. That’s why PETA is urging shelters to take in all animals in need, advising owners to have their animal companions spayed or neutered, and asking everyone to adopt, not buy, an animal.
