Hungry for success and Cane’s Sauce, Graves opened the first Raising Cane’s in Baton Rouge across from the North Gates in LSU To 28 August 1996. What began as a chicken finger dream slowly grew into a chicken finger empire with over 800 locations across the country, but Graves’ journey was not without its challenges. Two years before introducing Raising Cane’s to the world, Graves presented a business plan in college that received the lowest grade in the class: A restaurant that only serves chicken fingers? No way! But Graves believed in his dream.

After being turned down by one bank after another, Todd set about raising his own money, California As a boilermaker in an oil refinery, he worked 90-hour weeks to make his dream come true. When a fellow boilermaker told him he could make more money by fishing commercially, Graves set out Alaska and camped on the tundra for a month before getting a job on a boat fishing for sockeye salmon, working 20-hour days in harsh conditions. With money in hand, Graves returned home and secured a loan from the SBA before rounding up a few friends to help break ground on what would later be called “The Mothership.”

He had originally planned to name the restaurant “Sockeye’s” as a tribute to his time in AlaskaInstead, he took the advice of a friend and named it after his Labrador retriever, Raising Cane, who frequently visited the construction site. Today, Cane III serves his rightful role as namesake and mascot, frequently appearing in commercials with Graves and making waves on her own Instagram.

Finally 28 August 1996Graves opened the doors to Raising Cane’s. It was after 9pm and Graves took to the street to wave customers in – business was so good that the restaurant stayed open until 3:30 a.m.!

Today, 28 years later, Cane’s has grown to over 800 restaurants in over 40 states and continues to open 100 restaurants each year. With the goal of becoming one of the top 10 restaurant brands in the U.S. by 2030, Cane’s is aiming to grow to more than 150,000 Crew members in 1,600 restaurants and 10 billion dollars in sales.
