Frontier Airlines announces 11 new routes from 15 cities

Frontier Airlines continues to restructure its network. The Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier unveiled nearly a dozen new routes on Tuesday, all of which are scheduled to launch this fall.

The new connections include the airline’s fourth and fifth nonstop destinations from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City. Before this summer, the airline had never served this airport.

Frontier is also returning to Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) for the first time since last year and to Dulles International Airport (IAD) outside Washington, DC for the first time since 2021.

A total of 15 cities across the country are affected by the carrier’s latest network adjustment.

This is the latest move in a months-long restructuring during which Frontier has made efforts to increase its profitability.

Having already added well over 100 new routes and canceled dozens more earlier this year, the airline is shifting its fall schedule to focus primarily on the busiest days of the week for holiday travel – which also includes drastic cuts to its Tuesday and Wednesday flights.

Although flights are limited overall during the week, many of the new routes announced this week include either daily flights or multiple round-trip flights per week, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

A Frontier spokesperson told TPG that the airline had not made any cuts in connection with Tuesday’s announcement.

What you should know about these new routes

Although Frontier does not currently fly any of these 11 routes, as mentioned above, the airline has flown some of them in the past. In several cases, Frontier last operated nonstop service in 2022 or earlier.

With the exception of the Cincinnati-Sarasota route, each of these new routes touches a major hub on the three major U.S. network carriers, in line with a strategy Frontier has implemented this year that focuses less on traditional vacation destinations and more on travelers flying between major cities to visit friends and family.

In the Washington, DC region, Frontier has not had a presence at Dulles in recent years; the airline already serves Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).

Meanwhile, this latest route announcement continues the airline’s rapid growth in 2024 at ATL – the world’s busiest airport – and CVG, where it recently established a crew base.
