Engine failure on Boeing 737 aircraft during Alaska Airlines flight, requiring turnaround – Alaska Air Gr (NYSE:ALK), Boeing (NYSE:BA)

A Alaska Airlines, Inc. ALCOHOL A flight from Seattle to Oakland, California, had to turn around on Sunday afternoon after the aircraft – manufactured by The Boeing Company BA – allegedly had engine failure.

What happened: The Boeing 737-700 aircraft departed Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at 12:24 p.m. Pacific Day Light Time for Alaska Airlines Flight 1240, but returned to the airport after just over an hour due to a failure of the No. 1 engine on the left side of the aircraft, Fox Business News reported.

“We worked to care for our guests and facilitate their travel to Oakland yesterday afternoon, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement.

Boeing did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for further comment.

According to flight tracking website FlightAware, another plane brought passengers to Oakland later that evening.

Why it is important: Boeing is closely monitoring the safety of its aircraft.

The company also aims to acquire Spirit AeroSystems SP.

Alaska Airlines is currently attempting a merger with Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. HA.

Alaska Airlines made headlines earlier this year when a door lock failure occurred on a Boeing 737-9 MAX during one of its flights in January.

Earlier this summer, the National Traffic Safety Board criticized Boeing for revealing details of the spark plug malfunction investigation during a press conference by Elizabeth Lund, Boeing’s senior vice president of quality for commercial aircraft.

Price promotion: Boeing lost 0.37 percent to $172.84 in afternoon trading on Tuesday, while the prices of exchange-traded funds that hold the stock mostly rose.
