Heart transplant saves Georgia state police officer’s life

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – A Georgia state trooper is alive thanks to an organ donor who donated his heart.

The beating in Blake Shiver’s chest is a gift from a total stranger: a heart. Shiver said the only way he can say thank you is to live for two.

“It’s my duty to live my life to the fullest while trying to live for that person,” Shiver said.

Shiver is a police officer in the state of Georgia.

“I’m proud to be a part of this. It’s something that challenges me every day and brings me the fulfillment that I can actually change someone’s driving behavior and hopefully save a life,” Shiver said.

Shiver said he was diagnosed with heart failure out of the blue in 2020. Shiver, a father of two, said he leads a healthy lifestyle and the disease has been treated with medication.

In June, the situation became much more serious. At the beginning of July, he could no longer work due to heart failure. His organs began to fail.

“These doctors are excellent at what they do. Who am I to question what they were trained to do and what God gave them the gift to do,” Shiver said.

His heart transplant took place on July 28th in Piedmont Atlanta.

Although Shiver said it wasn’t easy to go on camera, he agreed to the interview for one reason: He wanted to try to encourage others to become organ donors.
