For those of us who grew up in the 90s, Melissa Joan Hart was a staple on our television screens. Known for her quirky and colorful sense of style, the Clarissa explains everything And Sabrina – Totally Bewitched! The actress showed us that not much has changed style-wise in 30 years by giving a preview of her equally daring, maximalist guest bathroom.
Designed by Nashville-based Branan White Designs, the modern powder room is a real feast for the eyes. Cloakrooms, powder rooms and bathrooms can be very sterile spaces, so it’s important to put a lot of effort into transforming them into the exact opposite, says interior designer Lucy Barlow.
“I always want them to feel homely and inviting by bringing in colour with a considered choice of wallpaper and painted joinery. For example, a storage or vanity unit painted in an unexpected colour can be a focal point that instantly adds warmth. Combine this with vibrant, eye-catching bathroom wallpaper ideas and you have a match made in heaven.”
The powder room is a hyper-functional space that is becoming increasingly appreciated as a place for striking design and decoration. It was once considered something secret and hidden, but like the kitchen, it is becoming a place to be proud of, to invest in, and to bring a certain attitude to.
For maximum results with minimal effort, printed wallpaper is unbeatable. A room filled with color and pattern makes an impression, but wallpapered powder rooms have many other positive qualities. Wallpapering an entire wall or several walls gives a room an intimate feel. Wallpapering most rooms is a straightforward, if time-consuming, process, but for bathrooms, you should hire a professional, recommends Paula Taylor, color and trend specialist at Graham & Brown.
Joan Hart’s space is brought to life by Gucci’s tiger face print wallpaper, which works beautifully with the bubblegum pink color scheme.
It’s no easy task to keep up with two interior design trends at the same time, but many experts are convinced that maximalist decor and pink room ideas will continue to prevail in the future.
Too often, decorating with pink is limited to little girls’ bedrooms. We think this is a waste of a wonderful color that doesn’t have to be seen as just feminine. Pink can be elegant and sensual, as an accent, as an enveloping shade, and even in a powder room. In fact, we think this is the perfect place to be bold.
The same goes for maximalism. This popular trend is all about excess. Invest in lavish looks that wouldn’t be out of place in the most magnificent palaces.
“I’ve always been a maximalist, a lover of ornamentation,” says renowned designer Matthew Williamson. “I want to create things that make others happy. I’ve never been comfortable with minimalism or monotonous colors. When I start designing a room, I think about how I can make an empty space radiate joy.”
Our walls aren’t just there to keep our homes alive; they’re places where we can experiment with colors, patterns and textures. The end result: a space full of character that never fails to make you smile.
