SAN JOSE – A 47-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy were killed Monday afternoon when a wrong-way driver crashed into their car on Highway 85 in San Jose, authorities said.
The fatal collision occurred around 3:40 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway south of Santa Teresa Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee said.
Before the crash, the CHP received reports of a 2024 Toyota Tacoma traveling the wrong way. Lee said the driver – a 39-year-old Orlando man – collided head-on with a 2021 Tesla Model Y before police were able to stop him.
The occupants of the Tesla – a woman and a boy from San Jose – were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The driver of the Toyota was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
A video posted on Reddit showed the Toyota traveling south on 85 near the Almaden Expressway exit.
It was not immediately clear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, Lee said.
The northbound lanes of Highway 85 were closed for an investigation and traffic was diverted to Highway 87.
