A timeline of Southern Brewing Company’s sudden, indefinite closure | Food & Drink

Southern Brewing Company has closed its doors indefinitely after over nine years in Athens, Georgia and nearly five years in Monroe, Georgia.

Although the brewery has not yet made an official statement on its social media accounts, a sign hangs on the door of its Athens location that reads: “We thank you for your loyalty over the years. We hope to be back in business in the future.”

Southern Brewing Co. opened in Athens in May 2015 by co-owners Rick Goddard and Brian Roth. The brewery has created over 50 beers using local ingredients, employs over 30 people and is involved in dozens of collaborations throughout the Southeast, according to its website. Southern Brewing Co. opened its second location in Monroe, Georgia, in 2019.

On Thursday, August 15, the taproom posted a photo on its Instagram and Facebook accounts announcing that the taproom would remain closed due to “unforeseen circumstances,” the post said.

On Friday, August 16, the taproom informed its users via Instagram and Facebook that the brewery would also be closed from Friday, August 16, through Sunday, August 18, due to “reasons beyond its control,” the post said.

When an Instagram user asked in the comments section if the brewery would be open on Tuesday, August 20, the brewery responded, “We are closed indefinitely.”

On Friday, August 23, Southern Brewing Co. posted on Instagram that all future events at the brewery were canceled. Several commenters demanded more information about why the brewery was canceling future events and whether this meant the brewery would close forever.

Not only was the Athens location closed, but the Monroe location was closed as well. On Friday, August 23, Monroe Southern Brewing Co. posted on Instagram that all future events were canceled.

The Southern Brewing Co. Facebook page lists hours as “temporarily closed,” while Google continues to list regular hours.

Red & Black has reached out to Southern Brewing Company for comment, but has not yet received a response.
