Stock market live updates: Markets rise before trading opens, Sensex gains 120 points, Nifty above 25,000 | Markets News


Stock market LIVE updates on Tuesday, August 27: The Indian benchmark indices BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 were in positive territory on Monday before the start of trading, even as global prices weighed on market sentiment elsewhere.

The BSE Sensex was at 81,815.06, up 0.14 percent, while the Nifty 50 was at 25,024, up 0.06 percent.

Separately, the S&P 500 closed lower on Monday as investors awaited inflation data for clues on the course of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cuts.



The technology-heavy Nasdaq also fell, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average was supported by gains of about one percent each for Caterpillar and American Express and closed only slightly higher.



The S&P 500 lost 0.32 percent and ended the session at 5,616.84 points.



The Nasdaq lost 0.85 percent to 17,725.77 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.16 percent to 41,240.52 points.



Markets in the Asia-Pacific region were broadly lower on Tuesday morning, although the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit new highs on Wall Street. Traders in Asia will also be looking ahead to China’s industrial earnings for the year (as of July).



The Japanese Nikkei 225 was down 0.35 percent, while the broad-based Topix remained unchanged.



The South Korean Kospi lost 0.42 percent, while the small cap Kosdaq suffered even greater losses of 1.14 percent.



Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.13 percent, making it the only major Asia-Pacific index to gain. The index is close to breaking its all-time high of 8,114.7 hit on August 1.



Hong Kong Hang Seng Index futures were at 17,694, below the HSI’s last closing price of 17,798.73.



Oil prices continued to rise late Monday after Israel and Hezbollah exchanged strikes over the weekend. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed 3.5 percent to $77.42 a barrel and Brent crude rose 3.05 percent to $81.43 a barrel, the highest price in about two weeks.



Oil prices gave up some of their gains on Tuesday, with WTI futures trading at $77.16 and Brent at $81.23.
