A few dog days of summer are on the way!

A few dog days of summer are on the way!

Daytime warming under a large upper-level low pressure system over New England has triggered some thunderstorms across New England and New Jersey this afternoon. This upper-level low pressure system will slowly move out of our area by Tuesday. Meanwhile, widespread temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit today have heated the Plains as far north as the Great Lakes and southwestern Pennsylvania. As this upper-level low pressure system moves out, extreme heat will move into our area by Wednesday. Enjoy!

TUESDAY

As the low pressure system passes aloft, hotter air will move into our region from the west. In the valley’s towns, temperatures could reach 32°C with bright sunshine! For those who love the dog days of summer, this is the perfect day.

WEDNESDAY

The full blast of heat and humidity will bring our valley areas to temperatures in the 90s! A cold front will be approaching, and ahead of that front, thunderstorms could form to hit our area. Heat and humidity will add to the instability, so some of the thunderstorms that form could be strong. Again, for those who enjoy the dog days of summer, this will be a great day, as September and the inevitable fall are just around the corner.

THURSDAY

The cold front will sag just south of our area, filtering cooler air south into our area. A disturbance in the upper atmosphere moving through the region will maintain the possibility of showers and thunderstorms.

AFTER THURSDAY (Friday-Sunday, August 30 – September 1)

Friday will be dry and cool in our area, thanks to Canadian air that brought in the earlier cold front. However, a disturbance moving along this frontal zone will provide additional precipitation opportunities Friday night into Sunday until dawn. At this point, Sunday looks dry during the day, with temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees in the mountains and 27 degrees in the valley cities. Cooler, drier, September-like air will arrive on Monday, Labor Day (September 2).
