Tori Spelling compares not talking to Brian Austin Green to “a divorce”

Tori Spelling and Brian Austin Green look back on a turbulent time in their friendship.

In the August 26 episode of Green’s podcast Elderly, The two reflected on the last time they spoke before losing touch for nearly two decades.

Spelling, 51, said after Beverly Hills, 90210 ended in 2000, she and Green – who starred together on the hit series for ten seasons – did not reunite as they had promised.

“I remember our last conversation and the last thing we said to each other 18 years ago,” she said. “I remember crying because we were so close and we were going to lose touch. It was almost like a divorce or something.”

“I remember you reassuring me that everything was going to be OK,” she continued. “I remember you saying, ‘We’ll always be together. We’ll even all go on vacation together.’ And that was the last time we spoke for 18 years.”

Green, 51, recalled trying to maintain the friendship by visiting Spelling at the home of her then-boyfriend and former co-star Vincent Young, despite having a complicated relationship with the actor, but Spelling seemed uninterested.

“It was just like she thought, ‘She just doesn’t want to be my friend.’ That’s really how I felt,” he said. “I tried visiting you and calling you. When that wasn’t reciprocated, I gave up. I didn’t know what was going on in your life.”

Green was also in a relationship with Vanessa Marcil at the time. (Marcil appeared 90210 for seasons 9 and 10, and the two eventually had a child together.) In the podcast, Spelling recalled that she wasn’t fully supportive of his relationship, which led to further friction in their friendship.

“It was frustrating to see this relationship from the perspective of a friend who loves someone so much. Seeing what was going on and how your friend was being treated and not being OK with it,” Spelling said of the dynamic between Green and Marcil. “But also knowing that you can’t really say anything because the person has to have their own experiences and go through their own journey.”

There was also a lot going on behind the scenes in her relationship with Young, some of which led to her moving away from her friendship with Green.

“For my part, I lost myself in this relationship again, as I have in previous relationships,” she explained. “This relationship was not a good relationship for me and towards the end I was tied up and things were not good.”

Spelling knew that Green disapproved of her romance with Young and admitted that she isolated herself from anyone who opposed it.

“I shied away from you because you weren’t a fan of (my) relationship,” she said. “You had a good working relationship with Vincent, but I don’t think you felt our personal relationship was right for me. My process was different and I would shy away from those who would really fight for me. I never stopped thinking about you and never stopped reaching out and reconnecting with you.”

The next time the two met was years later at a 90210 DVD release party when both Green and Spelling had left their relationships behind. Nevertheless, the actress was no longer the friendly old woman.

“You were married to (now ex-husband) Dean (McDermott) and I was with (now ex-wife) Megan (Fox) when we were still together – you got together and you never said hello to me once,” Green recalled. “I just always missed you guys and then you were gone.”

Eventually, the two mend their friendship. Spelling and Green are now on good terms again and said they talk on the phone regularly and have rekindled their old dynamic.

“I showed up anyway,” Green said. “I had come to terms with the fact that it wasn’t a good relationship (with Young), but you’re my sister, so there’s no exclusion.”
