The Rose of Versailles celebrates André Grandier’s birthday with new film images

The Rose of Versailles celebrates André Grandier’s birthday by releasing some new images from MAPPA’s upcoming film. Ai Yoshimura directs, Tomoko Konparu is involved in the screenplay, Mariko Oka is the character designer and Hiroyuki Sawano is in charge of the music, together with KOHTA YAMAMOTO. The film’s premiere is scheduled for spring 2025.

Toshiyugi Toyonaga voices André Grandier, while the rest of the main cast includes Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar François de Jarjayes, Aya Hirano as Marie Antoinette, and Kazuki Kato as Hans Axel von Fersen. You can watch the recently released trailer below.

The Rose of Versailles is based on a historical and romantic manga series by experienced mangaka Riyoko Ikeda. It was published by Shueisha as a serial story and ran from May 1972 to December 1973. The manga is considered one of the pioneering works of the Shojo genre. TMS Entertainment animated the original from 1979 The Rose of Versailles Anime, directed by Tadao Nagahama and Osamu Dezaki. It aired on Nippon TV for 40 episodes.

The official summary:
Oscar François de Jarjayes, raised as the “son” and heir of a general’s family, disguises himself as a beautiful woman in men’s clothing. Marie Antoinette arrives from neighboring Austria as a bride to become a noble and graceful queen. Oscar’s servant and childhood friend, the commoner André Grandier. Hans Axel von Fersen, a handsome and intelligent count from Sweden. They meet in the prosperous late 18th century in Versailles, France, and live out their respective destinies wonderfully while being tossed to and fro by the tides of time.

The Rose of Versailles also boosted Japanese interest in French tourism, and Ikeda was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in 2009. The film adaptation was announced in September 2022, four decades after the original anime series ceased broadcasting in 1980.
