Mother Teresa’s birthday

On August 26, India celebrates the birthday of Mother Teresa (August 26, 1910 – September 5, 1997). She was born Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Skopje, now in North Macedonia, and was later known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

Mother Teresa, a Catholic nun, took Indian citizenship in 1948 and dedicated her life to humanitarian work. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, who cared for the sick, poor and dying. Her selfless work earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Ryan White visits school by phone after being banned from classes because of AIDS

In 1985, 13-year-old AIDS patient Ryan White began “attending” classes at Western Middle School in Kokomo, Indiana, via telephone from home because the school administration had prohibited him from attending school in person due to his illness.

Maneka Gandhi’s birthday

Maneka Gandhi was born on 26 August 1956 in Delhi and is an Indian politician, animal rights activist and former journalist. She is widely known as the wife of the late Sanjay Gandhi, the younger son of the first woman Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.

After Sanjay’s sudden accidental death in 1980, Maneka entered politics in 1982. She is currently the Member of Parliament for Sultanpur district, where she is actively working for the modernization and improvement of the region.

On this day in 1789, during the French Revolution, the National Constituent Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.
