New Bedford man charged after shooting at Marriott hotel

On Friday, August 23, shortly after 8 p.m., three shots were fired from a hotel room at the Marriott Towne Place Suites in Wareham.

Two bullets whizzed through the hotel room door, narrowly missing two Wareham police officers who were there to investigate an earlier report that gunshots may have been heard coming from the restrooms behind the building, according to a statement from Wareham police.

After nearly hitting police officers, the two bullets flew through a wall into a billiards room where two children and an adult were. The third bullet lodged in the doorway of the hotel room. No one was injured.

According to police, the suspected shooter, New Bedford resident Scott Desimas, left his hotel room shortly after the shooting and was arrested “without further incident.” Police subsequently found a woman and two small children, as well as a rifle and a pistol, in Desimas’ hotel room.

The woman and children were “safely escorted from the premises,” police said.

Desimas is charged with four counts of assault with murder and firearm, one count of discharging a firearm within 150 meters of a building, two counts of recklessly endangering a child, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of possession of a firearm without an FID card.

According to a statement, Wareham Police Chief Walter Correia Jr. “praised the emergency responders for their quick and decisive actions to ensure the safety of all hotel guests and employees during this critical incident.”

In the statement, Correia also acknowledged Marriott employees “for their exemplary efforts and cooperation” as well as the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Unit for their assistance.

“The swift and professional actions of the officers and hotel staff were crucial in preventing damage and ensuring the safety of everyone involved,” said Correia.

Desimas is being held on $250,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Wareham District Court for an arraignment on Monday, August 26.

According to police, the investigation is still ongoing and has been handed over to the Wareham Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
