Possible fourth season of “Ted Lasso”: Is the story of AFC Richmond not over yet?

Fans of the hit Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso may have reason to celebrate, as recent reports suggest the series could return for a fourth season. Although it is widely believed that the series will end with season three, multiple sources have revealed that Warner Bros. Television has optioned key cast members, suggesting more episodes could follow.

The possibility of a fourth season of Ted Lasso caught many by surprise. The third season finale was set to air in May 2023. It seemed to wrap up the story as Jason Sudeikis’ character left AFC Richmond to return to the United States. The show’s creative team had previously indicated that they envisioned the TV show as a three-season story arc; so the finale felt like a natural conclusion to the story. However, recent developments suggest that the AFC Richmond saga may not be over yet.

Warner Bros. Television has reportedly secured the involvement of three key Ted Lasso cast members for a potential fourth season. According to Deadline, the studio has optioned Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift to play Rebecca Welton, Roy Kent and Leslie Higgins, respectively. This move strongly indicates the studio’s intention to bring these beloved characters back to the big screen.

Rebecca Welton (Waddingham), the owner of AFC Richmond, Roy Kent (Goldstein), the fiery assistant coach, and Leslie Higgins (Swift), the mild-mannered sporting director, have been crucial to the series’ success. Their characters have become fan favourites and their return would no doubt be welcomed by the show’s loyal audience.

When could production of Ted Lasso season 4 begin?

An official announcement regarding a fourth season has yet to be made, but Variety reports that Jason Sudeikis, who plays Ted Lasso and serves as one of the show’s co-creators, is believed to be involved “in some capacity” as an executive producer. Sudeikis was the heart of the show; his continued involvement would be crucial to maintaining the series’ unique blend of humor and heart.

If negotiations go smoothly, production on the new season could begin as early as 2025, The Wrap adds. This timeline would give the showrunners ample time to develop new storylines that further explore the characters’ lives in the post-Ted Lasso era.

Since its debut in August 2020, Ted Lasso has garnered critical acclaim and a passionate fan base. The show’s uplifting tone and heartwarming message resonated with audiences, especially during the difficult times of the pandemic. Its blend of humor, emotional depth and sports drama has made the series a standout in the television landscape.

At the end of the third season, AFC Richmond finished second in the league, behind Manchester City. This led to Ted Lasso resigning as manager of the team to coach his son’s team in the USA. This ending has satisfied some fans, while others were hoping for more, especially given the impact of the series and the love for its characters.

A glimmer of hope for fans?

One of the show’s actors, Nick Mohammed, who plays Nathan Shelley, has been vocal about his desire for the series to continue. Following reports of a possible fourth season, Mohammed took to social media and posted “Told you so! 😂” on X, stating that he had always hoped for more episodes.

While nothing has been confirmed, recent developments have reignited speculation and excitement among fans. If negotiations are successful, Ted Lasso could continue to explore new chapters in the lives of its characters and offer viewers more of the warmth, humor and inspiration that characterizes the series.
