Governor Green issues emergency order for Tropical Storm Hone: Maui Now
PC: Governor Josh Green by Wendy Osher.

Governor Josh Green, MD, has issued an emergency order regarding Tropical Storm Hone to make state resources available if needed.

A wildfire warning is in effect for the leeward parts of the smaller Hawaiian Islands until 6 p.m., and a wind advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday. “Given the strong winds generated by Hone and existing drought conditions, it is critical that the state and counties be prepared to quickly deploy personnel and resources, such as the National Guard, to respond to any wildfires that may threaten life, safety, or property,” the EP said.

At noon today, the National Weather Service forecast stronger winds that remain in the forecast today as Tropical Storm Hone continues to move westward. The NWS reports that “on its current track, Hone will pass along the southern slopes of the Big Island tonight into Sunday morning, bringing with it the potential for heavy rain, damaging winds and large surf.”

The NWS weather forecast calls for strong and gusty easterly winds and at times heavy rain to continue Sunday into Monday as Hone passes south of the smaller islands.

“A brief return of moderate to fresh trade winds is expected Monday evening into Wednesday of next week as Hone continues its westward journey and moves away from the island chain,” the NWS said.

Hurricane Gilma was last located 1,590 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. Tropical Cyclone Gilma, in the state’s far eastern region, will weaken by the end of next week as it approaches Hawaii, possibly bringing more rain to the islands, the NWS said.
