Mr. John Calvin Green Sr.

Mr. John Calvin Green Sr., age 93, of Cedartown, GA, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Mr. Green was born on May 26, 1931, to the late G.C. Green and Maude Jones Green. He was a lifelong member of Friendship Baptist Church of Cedartown.

He graduated from Cedartown High School in 1950 and began working in the meat department of Model Supermarket the day after graduation. On December 22, 1951, he married the love of his life, Zora Mae Mobbs.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army where he proudly served his country during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Corporal. Upon returning to Cedartown, he was employed by Atlanta Gas Light for 37.5 years before retiring and becoming a full-time farmer.

He always enjoyed being outdoors, sitting on his porch watching hummingbirds, spending time with his family, and was a proud supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project for over 20 years.

Mr. Green was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Zora Mae Green, his son, John Green Jr., and his brothers Vernell Green, Fred Green, Sam Green, Ed Green and Charles Green.

Mr. Green is survived by his daughters Janie Green Carter and her husband Allen, Linda Green Morgan and her husband Randy, and his grandchildren Johnna Green Owens (Heath), Randall McDowell (Tina), Jason McDowell (Jodie), Michael McDowell, Chris Morgan (Connie), and Carissa Carter Boatner (Eric). He also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren, as well as caretaker, neighbor, and best friend Brittany Cromer Elliot, also known as “Muscles,” and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service for Mr. Green will be held on Sunday, August 11th at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of Smith & Miller Funeral Home. The ceremony will be conducted by his great-grandson, Brandon Crawford, and nephew, Jesse Hambrick. Burial will follow in the family plot at Friendship Baptist Church.

Pallbearers are: Randall Green, Tim Mitchell, Tracy Elliott, Eric Boatner, Garrett Rodgers and Alex McDowell. Honorary pallbearers are: Cia Mitchell, Brittany Cromer Elliott, Edwina Green Hambrick, Mac Gamel, Avery (Little Bit) Elliott and Ruston Scott Crawford.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Cemetery Fund of Friendship Baptist Church, PO Box 866, Cedartown, GA, 30125.
