“BoJack Horseman” creator teams up with Netflix again for new animated series “Long Story Short”

Just as BoJack Horseman celebrates its 10th anniversary since its original premiere on Netflix and helps the streamer expand our definition of adult animation, the company has announced that it has commissioned a new animated comedy called Long Story Short from creator and executive producer Raphael Bob-Waksberg. In addition to reteaming with Netflix, Bob-Waksberg is also working on the series with longtime partners Tornante Television and ShadowMachine.

The official synopsis of the show reads: “‘Long Story Short’ is an animated comedy about a family through time. It’s about the shared history, the inside jokes, the old wounds. If you’ve ever had a mother, father, sibling, partner or child, this is the show for you. And by the way, would it kill you to call them?”

Bob-Waksberg will write, direct and executive produce the show alongside Noel Bright and Stephen A. Cohen of Tornante. They will be joined by senior producer Lisa Hanawalt, who was largely responsible for the look of “BoJack” and created the Bob-Waksberg-produced “Tuca & Bertie.” Netflix canceled the latter show after its first season, but the show found a new home on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim for its final two seasons. Corey Campodonico and Alex Bulkley of animation studio ShadowMachine also serve as co-executive producers.

Neither the cast nor the release date for “Long Story Short” have been announced yet.

In a statement about the new collaboration, Bob-Waksberg said: “It’s really exciting and an honor to be back doing what I love most: writing enthusiastic quotes for press releases to Hollywood trade publications. Who says you can’t go home again?!”

BoJack Horseman premiered on August 22, 2014, and ran for six seasons. Over the course of the series, the show received three Writers Guild of America Awards, three Annie Awards, and multiple Emmy nominations. The series featured Will Arnett, Aaron Paul, Alison Brie, Amy Sedaris, and Paul F. Tompkins as voice actors, and guest stars Stanley Tucci, Angelica Huston, Kristen Schaal, Olivia Wilde, and many more. IndieWire listed the series as one of the best animated series on Netflix, as well as the best animated series of all time.

In addition to BoJack and Tuca & Bertie, Bob-Waksberg also created and executive produced the Amazon Prime Video series Undone, which used rotoscoped animation and was also produced by Tornante. The series ran for two seasons and was directed by Rose Salazar and Bob Odenkirk.
