“Artists Teaching: Teaching Artists”, exhibitions highlight the work of artists and educators

The Department of Art exhibition, “Artists Teaching: Teaching Artists,” showcases the artwork of Clemson University’s artist-teachers and symbolically connects faculty research and experiences exploring elements of place, media, technology, and visual language. The event at the Lee Gallery includes a two-part exhibition, August 26-October 3 and October 16-December 5.

Head of the Art Department and Professor Valerie Zimany underlines the importance of the exhibition through its award-winning teachers.

“This two-part exhibition is a testament to the dynamic interplay between teaching and creative practice,” said Zimany. “It shows how our faculty members integrate their art and design research into their teaching, enriching both their work and the student experience.”

This exhibition in the Lee Gallery on Clemson’s main campus highlights the faculty’s commitment to experiential teaching for undergraduate and graduate students and provides an opportunity to share their current creative research with students, colleagues, and the broader public. The works reflect a wide range of perspectives and embody diverse communicative, visual, and material practices, as well as engagement in meaningful dialogue about contemporary art-making in the 21st century.

Clemson University’s status as a research university provides faculty with unique opportunities to experiment with new and emerging technologies and foster interdisciplinary collaboration, generating thoughtful discourse in response to the viewpoints and challenges of the present. This exhibition illustrates the role of faculty in leading the next generation of Clemson artists and designers and building cultural capital on the Clemson campus and in the region. The public is invited to participate in the active work of the School of Art and Design through the exhibition and related events.

Participating faculty artists include Jon Bolton, Kiley Brandt, Zen Cohen, John Cummings, David Donar, Mandy Ferguson, David Gerhard, Joey Manson, Todd McDonald, Amanda Musick, Alex Schechter, Drew Sisk, Brooks Harris Stevens, Kathleen Thum, Denise Woodward-Detrich, Anderson Wrangle, and Valerie Zimany.

Part I and Part II of “Artists Teaching: Teaching Artists” are open to visitors Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The accompanying artist talks and all events are free and open to the public.
