In the past, consumers could purchase airline tickets with cash at most airline counters in the United States. Passengers could also pay for drinks and snacks on board with cash. Today, however, most airlines are cashless, which some welcome. But there are also disadvantages.

Not every consumer has access to bank accounts, debit and credit cards. In fact, Fast Company reports, “There are at least six million people in the United States and nearly 1.5 billion people worldwide who do not have a bank account.” The Federal Reserve reported, “17 percent of adults with incomes under $25,000 do not have a bank account, compared with 1 percent of adults with incomes between $50,000 and $99,999.”

Without a bank account, a person has no access to a bank account. And data shows that when airlines stop accepting cash, low-income people are disproportionately affected. But there are still some who refuse. Here are the U.S. airlines that still accept cash.

American Airlines

American Airlines is one of the few major airlines that still accepts cash at some airport counters and travel centers. However, their website says “some” airport counters, so this varies by location.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Air’s website states that ticket counters in the United States and Canada accept U.S. dollars and Canadian dollars. It also states that ticket counters in Mexico only accept Mexican pesos.

Alaska Air also offers a solution for customers who want to pay cash at cashless airports. These airports have ReadySTATION kiosks where, for a $5 fee, customers can convert cash into a prepaid debit card that can be used to pay for flights.

southwest

Although Southwest no longer accepts cash at its U.S. ticket counters, the airline continues to accept cash at its international locations..

JetBlue

Although JetBlue does not accept cash for reservations at most airports, the airline’s website states that Dominican pesos are accepted at airports and ticket counters in the Dominican Republic.
