San Joaquin Delta College announced Saturday that Trustee Valerie Stewart-Green, who served the college for nearly three decades first as an employee and then as a trustee for Tracy and Mountain House, has passed away.

Stewart-Green has lived in Tracy for about 28 years, 22 of which she worked at Delta College until her retirement in 2022. For most of her tenure at Delta, she served in the Office of the President, where Stewart-Green – who holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco – worked with college administration and the Board of Trustees.

She was appointed to the Board of Trustees in October 2022 and has represented the Tracy and Mountain House communities since then. As a trustee, Stewart-Green often spoke of her desire to ensure that all community members are informed about the college’s programs and services and how those programs and services can improve their lives.

“I want to make sure our students have the best educational opportunities and are successful and that we do what is best for the community,” she said when she was first appointed to the board.

Dr. Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson, superintendent and president of Delta College, described Stewart-Green as a passionate supporter of students, especially students from underserved communities.

“She wanted all students to have access to the opportunities the college offers. She also wanted to ensure that staff had the support they needed to fulfill the college’s mission. The campus community will miss her greatly, and I am grateful for the dedication with which she served the district. I extend my deepest condolences to her loved ones.”

Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Charles Jennings said that in his 25 years of working with Stewart-Green, he has seen that her commitment to the college’s mission has always come first.

“Since her retirement, she has never failed to advocate for her community when it needed her, and she has continued to work tirelessly as a trustee on its behalf. I will miss Valerie and the many conversations we have had about how to best meet the needs of everyone in our diverse community.”
