As the oldest members of Generation Z (or Gen Z) enter the workforce and gain the purchasing power to become new homeowners, they have transformed their living spaces into newer forms. Of the other older generations, Generation Z is the one that has grown up entirely in a digital culture. Having spent most of their time online, this generation consumes everything available on the internet, which brings with it a set of distinct personal preferences and styles.

They value eco-friendly materials, versatile furniture, sustainable materials and a combination of bright colors and simple design. With their digital-focused approach, this generation also favors technological integration and prefers smart home devices that match their design. When it comes to adding a personal touch to the home, Gen Z makes it crucial that their spaces speak for them. “Personalization is important to Gen Z, who often incorporate DIY projects, original artwork and unique style and design combinations into their homes. They get inspiration from social media platforms, their favorite shows or social media and like to design spaces that reflect their identity and values,” says Latika Khatri, founder of a design studio.

“Some trends that have emerged recently in Gen Z’s attitude towards interior design are influencing wider businesses, including sustainability, individuality and technologically advanced designs. Companies are increasingly creating eco-friendly, personalized and versatile items that represent Gen Z’s values and shape future market trends,” says Akanksha Sinha, interior designer.

The design aesthetic preferred by Gen Z is sophisticated, meaningful and authentic. They are also not afraid to add a touch of vibrancy to their homes with vibrant color palettes and fairy lights. “Aesthetics like modern boho style, industrial chic and retro futurism are what interest this generation the most. They combine clean lines with personal, diverse details to create environments that are authentic, meaningful and an expression of their personality,” added Latika.
