This 70s-inspired home renovation is a total transformation

Kirsten BlazekFounder of a design company A1000XBetter In Los Angelesdescribes her friend Jennifer as “the definition of a friend who gets through anything.” They have traveled the world together, celebrated many milestones and both have a passion for design. Jennifer Parker Stantonher buddy is a real estate agent and lives in Los Angeles, but in a previous life was a costume designer for a film.

“She’s a penny pincher and nothing makes her happier than searching for vintage items,” says Kirsten. “She’s particularly fond of mid-century ceramics and both she and her husband have a particular love for 1970s-style design.” That means lots of wood, texture and carefully collected vintage items from that era.

BEFORE: OFFICE

Jennifer’s office in her 1958 mid-century modern home was in dire need of a makeover, so she brought in Kirsten to bring her vision to life using A1000XBetter’s design magic.

Californian modern with a woody Coastal Atmosphere was the requirement. “We wanted to stay true to the style of the house, but incorporate elements that you would find in a Big Sur-type wood-clad house,” says Kirsten.

Kirsten’s team renovated three connecting rooms – an office, a bathroom and a laundry room.

Storage space was an absolute must in all three rooms, as was a bathtub, a generously sized shower, and a laundry room that was not the size of a tiny closet.

Kirsten designed bespoke joinery for all three rooms to maximise storage space. They revamped the office layout and replaced an old built-in cupboard with an entire wall of storage behind the desk area.

“We also added storage and shelving to the adjacent wall and designed a custom desk that faces out onto the pool area,” says Kirsten, creating an L-shaped area for Jennifer’s workspace.

Kirsten used Jennifer’s collection of vintage art, which she had sparingly collected over the years, in the rooms. “It was a great way to bring in some personality and combine some soulful vintage items with the new remodel.”

The result? “The space is earthy, organic and atmospheric with a quirky, 70s-inspired design,” she says of the overall design.

BEFORE: BATH

The former bathroom was fitted with old-fashioned tiles that did not fit the aesthetic of the mid-century modern living style. They had to go.

Kirsten opened up the bathroom to fulfill her best friend’s wish for a larger bathtub. She also added lush greenery Heide Ceramics Tile and terrazzo floors in the bathroom create a perfect contrast to the warm walnut walls.

Cabinet towers on both sides of the bathroom vanity provide additional storage space in the bathroom.

BEFORE: LAUNDRY ROOM

The previous laundry room was aesthetically quite sad and barely offered enough space to move around.

AFTER: Laundry

Kirsten created a galley space that mimics the rich tones and moody hues that give the entire room a unique and effortlessly cool vibe. Kneeling Fauchere Wallpapers add a natural and playful element from the wall to the ceiling.

In the laundry room, Kirsten used a stackable washer/dryer to maximize space and accommodate a sink and large vanity cabinets. The aesthetic is effortless and airy with a vintage-inspired touch and we love it!
