ROCHESTER – The Rochester Senior Center was filled with paintings and samples on the evening of Aug. 22 for the Council on Aging’s annual art exhibit.

The theme of this year’s show was “garden party,” which was evident in the leaf-adorned headdresses worn by many of those in attendance.

Guests were tasked with voting for their favorite artwork and textiles to determine the winners of the People’s Choice Awards.

Prosecco, canapés and other refreshments were passed around the crowded room as spectators chatted and viewed the art.

The artists sat in a long row across the room and exhibited some of their works.

Artist Pat Halstead showed a piece she embroidered that depicted twelve different types of colorful berries.

“It took a long time,” said Halstead, who “took up” the hobby on her own. “I just got a set and started.”

David and Millie Morrison, husband and wife, were two other artists in the show.

Millie said she started painting about 20 years ago and specialised in architectural and floral paintings.

David also enjoys painting flowers, especially lilies and lilacs, all in watercolor. He started painting seven years ago.

“I helped him a little bit,” Millie said. “He took a class and watched videos on YouTube to learn.”

On David’s table hung numerous 12 x 18 centimetre flower paintings, which he said were intended to be given as a substitute for a bouquet of flowers to sick people in hospitals.

Bunny Mogilnicki showed her painting entitled “Flowers Galore,” which she said took her 12 hours to complete.

Mogilnicki uses pastels and said she is “all about the color.”
