Great Bend Alive takes charge of downtown Christmas window decorating contest

Great Bend Alive, the downtown development arm of Great Bend Economic Development, announces that it has been entrusted with organizing the Downtown Christmas Window Decorating Contest. This popular annual event, previously organized by the Rosewood Santas Around the World Committee, has brought holiday cheer to our community for four wonderful seasons.

As an active member of the Kansas Main Street and National Main Street organizations, Great Bend Alive is proud to carry on the mission of the Main Street movement, considered one of the most effective economic development tools in the country. This movement focuses on revitalizing downtowns through exciting events, historic preservation and innovative design.

This year, with the support of a generous anonymous donor, Great Bend Alive has donated $3,000 in prize money to encourage all downtown businesses to light up their stores, not just the contest windows. In recognition of Great Bend Alive’s commitment to increasing downtown vibrancy, the Santas Around the World committee has passed the torch to continue this cherished tradition.

Great Bend Alive aims to inspire businesses and organizations to embrace the holidays, encourage holiday shopping and transform downtown Great Bend into a magical destination. The contest offers cash prizes: $1,500 for 1st place judges’ choice, $1,000 for 2nd place judges’ choice and $500 for the People’s Choice Award.

“Our team is actively reaching out to downtown businesses to gauge their interest in participating in the contest. For businesses that do not wish to participate directly, Great Bend Alive will help find an organization, club or individual to decorate the window for them,” said Sara Arnberger, Great Bend Alive executive director. “In addition, those who do not have a downtown business can apply to decorate empty windows. Availability is limited and spots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested can contact Lee Ann June, GBED communications director, at 620-796-2407 or [email protected].”

The deadline for companies and decorators to apply is November 8. Judging will take place November 21-29 and winners will be announced on December 3. For more information and to apply, visit gbedinc.com/lights.
