Trevor Story has “really great chances” to return to the Red Sox soon

The Red Sox are 3 ½ games out of a wild card spot in the American League with just over a month of the regular season left, and they could be getting reinforcements in the near future.

Trevor Story has been on the 60-day injured list since April after suffering a shoulder injury that required surgery. The infielder was originally expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season, but Story has made progress in his rehab, giving the team optimism about an earlier return.

“He continues to make tremendous progress and when you have him around in the locker room, he has a different attitude every day,” Boston chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said during his appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” on Thursday. “He’s excited to get on the field. Liam (Hendriks) is expected to return sooner, but there’s a really good chance Trevor will put on a Red Sox uniform at some point and help us.”

Story played just eight games for Boston before suffering the injury. He had seven hits in 31 at-bats.

Hendriks underwent Tommy John surgery last August before signing with the Red Sox. He is currently rehabbing at Triple-A Worcester to work his way back to the major leagues.

Both players will be welcome additions to a team heading toward the playoffs. The bullpen flipped the script in the last two games against Houston, but has struggled to hold onto the lead lately. And with the Red Sox preparing for a tough series in the final stretch of the season, the return of some healthy players should give them a boost as they look to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
