ROACHDALE – The Roachdale Public Library has received a grant to conduct a creative program for older adults called “Tell Your Story.”

Roachdale is one of 36 libraries receiving training and funding through Lifelong Arts Indiana, a program that promotes arts and creativity opportunities for adults ages 65 and older, and will host “Telling Your Story.” The grant, supported by the Indiana Arts Commission in partnership with the Family and Social Services Administration, will allow the library to install handrails on the inside of its side door, which will serve as the entrance for this series.

What is your story? How has your past shaped you? Do your favorite foods and recipes tell part of your story?

Professional storyteller Portia Sholar Jackson (also known as Momma Portia) presents a free workshop to help you tell your story. A perfect opportunity to start some family conversations and share your past.

The program is for seniors ages 65 and older. You are welcome to come alone or bring a friend – or you can bring an adult child or family member. If you are interested in genealogy, family history or storytelling, this might be a good place to start – your partner may want to help you write or record some of your thoughts as you write your story.

Saturdays, August 24 and 31, September 7 and 14, at 1 p.m. (doors open at 12:45 p.m.) Although it’s best to enjoy all four parts, it’s OK to attend if your schedule allows.

Divided into four parts, the final Saturday includes a potluck where participants are invited to share a family recipe and tell their story.

During the second series of workshops, the library will explore your artistic side with Rick Johnston (also known as “The Bearded Painter”). We will plan these sessions with participant input to determine the best times.

People can email [email protected] or call (765) 522-1491 to reserve a spot with Momma Portia to write their story. You can leave a voicemail if staff is unavailable. Leave your name, phone number, and the number of people attending with you.

This activity is made possible in part by the Indiana Arts Commission with support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administrations Division of Aging.
